Collingwood College students take to the waters of Victoria Harbour
Nineteen Year 9 students from Collingwood College attended a 10 week Learn to Sail at Docklands Yacht Club.
Students had come to Australia from countries such as Sudan, Iran, Kenya, Somalia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and China.
Most of them had never been in a boat before never mind in a capsizable dinghy. After overcoming their fear of capsizing students showed a willingness to learn and most demonstrated good sailing techniques.
Khadija was one very determined young lady. Sailing both the Ozi Opti single handedly and a Pacer crewed by two other students.
Nathan, Ibie, Luke, Duy, Zeaky and Abdella were extremely proficient in capsizing and righting an overturned dinghy.
During the course students were taught; how to retrieve a “man” overboard, sailing a designated course and tieing various knots.
