Surfing Up A Storm

While most of his teammates spent the long summer days relaxing, Bryce Newton was ensuring he was in peak physical condition for the resumption of the Victorian Junior Basketball League season.

Replacing the basketball and hardwood for the sand and surf, the 13-year-old’s talents extend beyond the court.

The Under 16 (2) Bellarine Storm representative was one of the four-strong Victorian team which competed in the National Surf Life Saving Championships held in Tasmania in January.

Bryce, a member of the Ocean Grove Surf Life Saving Club, was initially part of a 15-man development squad from which the state team was selected.

Putting his abilities to the test in a variety of surf lifesaving events in the pool, on the beach and in the open surf, Bryce played a key role in the success of the Big V, which emerged triumphant from the two day event.

The developing forward will be looking to translate his success onto the court as his team, coached by Travis Ferrari, attempt to finish off the cross-over stage of the VJBL season strongly.
