Bellarine Storm – VJBL Wrap

Grading Phase 2 – Round 2

Friday 7th February 2014

Under 12 Boys (1)

Bellarine 31 lost to vs Hawthorn (4) 32

Best Players: K. Keenan, M. Scott

Top Scorers: M.Scott & K. Keenan 12

Game summary: After a close start, Bellarine trailed by three points for majority of the game. It was until the final three minutes, where the team increased their intensity on defense, and scored three out of four free throws.  Hawthorn was able to clinch the win by one point.  We'll need to ensure we can play that level of intensity for the entire game next week as this loss makes next weeks game against Hawthorne (3) a must win game to reach VJL1

Next Week: vs. Dandenong @ MSAC

Best Case Finish (as per grading map): VJL 1

Worst Case Finish (as per grading map): VJL 2

Under 12 Boys (2)

Bellarine 28 lost to Sunbury (2) 34

Best Players: Tito Arnott, Eoin McNolty and Saxon Copeland

Top Scorers: Eoin 8pts, Tito 7, Saxon 4 and Felix 4

Game summary: The boys had a great start to the game, scoring the first four points, but unfortunately for the next quarter the boys could not buy a basket and Sunbury couldn't miss.  The boys defence was a lot better this week and we managed to stay with our players for majority of the game.  Some great defence by Eoin in the third quarter kept us in the game, along with some excellent rebounding from the smallest player on court, Saxon.  The boys played a brilliant fourth quarter and came back to within six points and out scored Sunbury 15 to 7.  Unfortunately the second quarter just let us down.  There was some brilliant team work this week and the boys worked hard all game.  Great job boys, keep up the hard work.

Next Week: Broadmeadows 2 @ Broadmeadows

Best Case Finish (as per grading map): Regionals

Worst Case Finish (as per grading map): Regionals

Under 14 Boys (1)

Bellarine 33 lost to Eltham 74

Under 14 Boys (2)

Bellarine 32 lost to Coburg (3) 49

Best Players: Baxter Nielson, Ben Crombie, Henry Walsh

Top Scorers: Baxter Nielson, Ben Crombie

Game summary: The boys were under pressure right from the tip off and were never far out of the game. Our ball movement at times was fantastic as was our defensive pressure, but consistency let us down on the night. Coburg have been one of the strongest teams we have come up against this campaign and that was the overwhelming factor in the end. The boys played hard until the final whistle which was great to see.

Next Week: Geelong (3) @ home

Under 14 Boys (3)

Bellarine 24 lost to Altona (3) 39

Best Players: D. Clifton, S. Anderson

Top Scorers: D. Clifton, S. Anderson

Game summary: The boys were in this game for three quarters, unfortunately the game slipped away in the final minutes. The team struggled a bit against a well drilled press. A real highlight was a great play involving our newest player, Jack Lenan, who showed great vision and team work in only his second game.

Next Week: vs. Collingwood (3) @ home

Best Case Finish: Regionals

Worst case Finish: Regionals

Under 16 Boys (1)

Bellarine 55 defeated Southern Peninsula (2) 31

Best Players:  H. Ling, B. Morgan, H. Lovell

Top Scorers: H. Lovell 12, B. Thomas 11

Game summary: After a slow start in the first quarter, we increased our intensity on the Southern Peninsula ball carrier for the remainder of the game, and forced them in to making numerous turnovers resulting in some easy transition baskets. The boys are really working well together and our offence was sensational.

Next Week: Craigieburn @ Werribee

Best Case Finish (as per grading map): VJL1

Worst Case Finish (as per grading map): VJL4

Under 16 Boys (2)

Bellarine 48 lost to Corio Bay 50

Best Players: C. Whelan, L. Hart, B Newton

Top Scorers: C Whelan 15, L Hart 10, B Newton 8

Game summary: Corio Bay - on their home court - came ready to play.  We missed some shots early which kept Corio Bay in striking distance, although we controlled the lead for much of the game.  Corio Bay increased their pressure in the fourth quarter and some good outside shooting saw them steal the lead in the dying stages.  Unfortunately our composure with the ball let us down on the night.

Next Week: vs. Wallan @ Bellarine

Best Case Finish (as per grading map): Regional

Worst Case Finish (as per grading map): Regional

Under 18 Boys

Bellarine 49 lost to Craigieburn 56

Under 20 Boys

Bellarine 41 defeated Warrandyte (3) 38

Best Players: Jack Diment, Dylan Marles, Harley Miller

Top Scorers: Ryder Woods

Game summary: We went on an 11-0 run in last quarter to get over the line! Great team effort!

Next Week: vs Camberwell (2) @ Werribee

Under 12 Girls

Bellarine 15 drew with Eltham (4) 15

Under 14 Girls (1)

Bellarine 58 defeated Mornington 26

Best Players: Agnes Emma-Nnopu, Lucy McEvoy, Sophie Milsome

Top Scorers: Lucy 19, Agnes 27

Game summary: Another convincing win from the girls, who stuck to their game plan and took control of the game early.

Next Week: Eltham @ home

Best Case Finish: VJL1

Worst Case Finish: Regional

Under 14 Girls (2)

Bellarine 14 lost to Eltham (6) 32

Under 16 Girls

Bellarine 70 defeated Western Port 39

Best Players: Ella Cornish, Eve Braslis and Holly Milsome

Top Scorers: Eve (18pts), Ella (12 pts), Raini (9pts)

Game summary: The game began as somewhat of an arm wrestle, with Bellarine winning the first quarter by eight points. The girls soon found their feet with some great defence and quick baskets from well-timed intercepts. Eliza’s strong defence under the basket in the second and third quarters meant that Western Port’s height and strength was not as great a threat as it was in the first quarter. The game saw every player contributing, to gradually extend our lead and finish with a win.

Next Week: vs Waverley @ home.

Best Case Finish: VC

Worst Case Finish: VJL1
