The Track and Field Athletic events and the half marathon will be conducted according to the rules of the IAAF and the published supplementary rules. Open technical specifications apply to all events. Qualifying standards apply to all events. Specifications and standards can be found in the document section of this site.
Athletes are required to have their entry endorsed by their governing body.
Supplementary regulations
1. Definition
For definition purposes, each state/province shall hereafter be referred to as Association. Northern Territory Athletics shall hereafter be referred to as NTA, Athletics Australia as AA and the International Amateur Athletics Federation as IAAF.
2. When
Competition will commence Sunday 10 May 2009 and conclude on Wednesday 13 May 2009. A 10km road race for wheelchair athletes will be held on the morning of Sunday the 10th. The Half Marathon will be held on the morning of the final day's competition Saturday 17 May. DATES TO BE CONFIRMED
Track and Field events will be held from Sunday 10th May until Wednesday 13th with competition commencing at 6pm until 10pm.
3. Participant Nomination and accreditation Entry is open to persons from participating countries and they are required to be members of an IAAF affiliated organisation. Participants are required to wear their Associations official uniform when competing.
Each participant must complete the prescribed entry form including endorsement from his or her National Sporting Body, personal best performances, attachment of two passport photographs and ensure that the entry is received by the Arafura Games by close of business on Friday April 10th 2009.
4. Rules of Competition
The Track and Field Athletic events and the half marathon will be conducted according to the rules of the IAAF with variations when required to allow for extreme weather conditions.
The Minimum age for entry is fifteen (15) years on the 31st December 2009. Open technical specifications apply to all events.
5. Athletes with a disability
A range of events will be programmed for athletes with a disability in Wheelchair, Cerebral Palsy, Intellectual Disability and Ambulant categories. These events will be conducted according to the rules of the IAAF with variations as endorsed by the International Paralympic Committee combined rules 2002.
6. Check In Athletes must personally check in 1 hour before their first event each day at the designated athlete check in area.
7. Competition Number Athletes will be issued with competition numbers at check in. It is a requirement of competition to wear these numbers.
8. Spikes Spikes in competitor footwear must conform to the following maximum standards.
Track 7mm long by 4mm diameter, maximum of 11 per shoe
High Jump 9mm long by 4mm diameter, maximum of 11 per shoe
Long & Triple Jump 9mm long by 4mm diameter, maximum of 11 per shoe
Javelin 9mm long by 4mm diameter, maximum of 11 per shoe
Shoes will be subject to clearance before competition.
9. Starting Blocks The organisers will provide starting blocks and no private blocks are to be used.
10. Equipment and Private Implements All private implements and equipment must be handed in no later than twenty-four (24) hours prior to the first event of the competition each day.
A technical room will be available to receive implements, which will become available to all competitors. Implements may be collected from the technical room after competition has ended.
11. Medical The NTA, its officers and officials will take all due care but will not be liable for any injury, accident or illness which may be suffered by an athlete.
There will be a Sports Medical Facility to be located at the Marrara Complex. First aid facilities and a sports trainer will be on hand at the venue.
12. Meeting A meeting for team managers will be held at the Arafura Stadium prior to the start of competition at a date to be advised, for the purpose of rule clarification and competition questions. It is essential that all team managers attended so that accurate information can be relayed to athletes. An interpreter will be provided.
