July 4 Report - Patron's and Hoben Trophy Finals

CBA Winter Club Basketball Results 2015 by Bruce Martin

Hoben Trophy Recap:

Wolverines have had a long four year wait to extract revenge on arch-rival Atami when it comprehensively outplayed Atami 83-53 in the 2015 Hoben Trophy final of the Men’s Premier club basketball played in Cowles Stadium on Saturday.

The two sides last clashed in the 2010 and 2011 Hoben finals when Atami was at its peak, winning both encounters by a five point margin. Aranui, a defunct club from which the Wolverines club was formed by Jamie Graham around 2004/5 also won the trophy in 1981 and 1989. Atami have recorded six wins and four seconds in the Hoben trophy since 2005.

Graham has built up a team of younger players around stalwarts, former Ram Lionel Hopgood and Dean Le Warne, over the last few seasons. He has nurtured one of Canterbury’s rising stars, 19 year old Britt Taylor, a Canterbury Ram this season, who controls the distribution of the ball, leads by example and drove effortlessly through the experienced Atami defence of the veterans Scott and Ritchie Howell.

Ruthless Wolverines defence shut down the Atami plays and it was only one Atami player who reached double figures, the experienced Rusty Thomson with 20 points. David Gibb with 23 and Shou Nisbet 13 points were the icing on the cake for Wolverines.Graham commented later ‘So proud of these boys. They have been so committed and dedicated to the club for a number of years and to finally see all that hard work come to fruition is awesome. And to do it against a team that has been so dominant for so many years makes it even sweeter!’

Patron’s Trophy Recap:

The Women’s Premier Patron’s trophy final was expected to go to the newcomers on the block, North Canterbury and they led for most of the first quarter, ahead 27-17. Playing with only two subs, the pressure from the highly experienced University of Canterbury, led by the veterans Rosanna Katene and Pip Connell, both Canterbury Wildcats, began to toll heavily on North Canterbury. University controlled the second half to win 81-68 to capture its fifth Patron’s trophy title in the 10 Finals it has been in since 2005

Shots that would have easily gone down missed frequently for North Canterbury and a mounting foul count didn’t help. New recruit Bianca Aguiar stood out for University with 19 points and Katene a valuable 17, while teenage rep Laken Wairau (14) also had a strong game. Mary Goulding notched 23 hard earned points and Hayley Gray grafted for her 17 points for North Canterbury.

Other Results:

Canterbury Ram Marty Davison turned on a blistering shooting display (21 pts, 7 rebounds) carrying his Pioneer side to a third placing in the Men’s competition when it outplayed University 92-73, despite a valuable 27 points and 15 rebounds contribution from 2014 Ram Brent Fisher for the students.

Lincoln University pulled away in the second half from Checkers in the fifth place play-off, led by Aled Jones with 25 points, seven rebounds and six assists to win 78-71. The game was officially a forfeit win to the students as Checkers chose to play leading Canterbury Ram Ethan Rusbatch who splashed in 30 points and 12 rebounds.

Defending Patron’s trophy Lincoln University outplayed Gators Women 64-40 in the third place play-off, led by Tall-Fern Shea Crotty with 15 points, while Minties chased Halswell most of the fifth place encounter, before Halswell slipped ahead to win 54-47.
