Canterbury Men's Team Invited to Argentina
Canterbury Basketball Association is thrilled to announce its involvement in the 2014 Patagonia Cup being held in Bahia Blanca, Argentina.
The Patagonia Cup began in 1999 as a rugby tournament and has since grown to include softball, hockey and in 2014 Basketball will be introduced. Bahia Blanca is synonymous with basketball – with 2004 Olympic Gold medallists Manu Ginobili, Pepe Sanchez and Alejandro Montecchia all residing in the City, so the level of competition is expected to be high.
Christchurch has had a long term link to the event with High School Old Boys rugby being involved since its inception – in fact winning the title on 2 separate occasions. This relationship has provided an opportunity for Canterbury Basketball to become involved.
With Christchurch short on opportunities for talented male players with the absence of an NBL franchise in the city, the tour is seen as a positive by players, coaches and administrators of the game. The Association also sees the tour as an opportunity to grow relationships with the Argentinian City and Argentinian basketball administrators with a view to enhancing the programmes that currently exist in Canterbury.
Applications for the Head Coach and Manager positions for the team will open in early June and a full Canterbury Men’s team will be selected later this year to travel to Argentina.
