BBNZ Secondary School Nationals - Day Four and Burnside Boxscore

National AA Secondary Schools Basketball Championships – Nelson- Day four

By Bruce Martin

‘The boys are gutted’ writes Sharon, statistician extraordinaire, from Nelson

The Burnside High boys basketball succumbed to Nayland College 70-67 in the Top eight quarter-finals at the National AA Secondary Schools Championships being played in Nelson and now meets Auckland Grammar school in today’s 5-8th semi-final at 12.30pm.

Burnside was absolutely gutted after their three point loss. They held Nayland to 21-22 at quarter-time but a poor second quarter saw Burnside slip behind 26-41 by half-time (outscored 5-19), having only shot 9/33 (27%). The third quarter was evenly matched 15 points apiece and Nayland in the first minute of the fourth quarter extended the lead to 16 points, up 42-26 when Burnside began to take control. Oli Davies slotted 29 points and grabbed 11rebounds with his trusty side-kick Nick Erwood slotting 17 and getting 11 rebounds but they lacked their usual support. Burnside went ahead by two points entering the last minute but disaster struck and Burnside lost by three.

Over-all Burnside shot 23/72 (32%) while Nayland, mainly playing five key players sunk 28 from 81 (35%).

Sharon E comments: Hard to know what is worse, being beaten well and truly or losing when you had a chance to win.

Best of luck Burnside for a strong finish, hold your heads up high.

Today’s main semi-finals are Westlake Boys High against Hutt Valley High while the defending champion Rosmini College plays Nayland College this evening.

In the bottom 8 quarters last night Aranui High was pipped by Wanganui High 71-73 and Cashmere High boys failed to lift their spirits and was humbled 85-63 by Onehunga High school. Aranui takes on Lynfield College this morning while Cashmere Boys meets Otumoetai College, both in the 21-24 Semi’s.

Today’s main Girls semi-finals are Auckland Girls Grammar against Mt Albert Grammar while Hamilton Girls High takes on Rangitoto College. Second in pool two Mt Albert Grammar upset Fraser High 69-47 while Auckland Grammar (2nd in 3) upset Westlake Girls High 66-60 in the quarters yesterday.

In the Middle 8 quarters Christchurch Girls High thumped Marlborough Girls College 70-57 while Rangiora High bounced back from yesterday’s disappointments to edge out Rotorua Girls High 50-46. Buller High got a narrow edge over Tauranga Girls College, sneaking home 54-53 while Cashmere Girls run of bad luck continued to dog them, narrowly beaten by Hawera High school 59-61 which stops the 9-12 semi’s from being an all-South Island affair.

Rangiora intends to finish ninth and meets Buller High while Ch Ch Girls clash with Hawera High, both games at 2.15pm today.

Cashmere Girls will now play Marlborough Girls College this morning in the 13-16 semi’s.

In the Grand Final of the A Secondary school championships (for schools less than 600 co-ed and 300 single sex) Te Aroha College pipped Dunstan College 68-64 while Te Aroha also claimed the double with its women’s team beating Melville 53-46.
