Iupeli and Berking Take it the Lads
Likely Samoan Beach pairing of Imakulata Iupeli and Olga Berkings took on one of the mens pairs in an tough workout to test the sand at the Faleata Beach Centre. With finishing work on the Centre in progress, these determined ladies from Samoa gave as good as they got from the boys team, surprising them with excellent shut out blocking and controlled general court play.
Minor modifications to the beach courts are currently underway to bring them up to international standards for the South Pacific Games commencing on Monday the 27th of August.
In what should be the best womens beach competition ever, any one of the 9 entering teams appear to be able to claim for a medal.
Vanuatu, defending champs Fiji, Solomon Islands and PNG look very strong, as do the teams from Guam, CNMI, New Caledonia and Tahiti.
All eyes will be in Fiji's Mereula Meya to see if she can go three Gold straight, being undefeated in SPG competition since the sport was included in the 1999 Guam SPG.
