BITS VS PANTHERS
Well this one got very ugly as predicted. This will go down as one of the darkest days in Panthers history and perhaps it signals the return of the nightmares of the early-mid 2000's when the club struggled to be competitive most weekends. It was always going to be a tough ask for the Panthers, but even with several senior players missing and young kids having to step up to Seniors, a 42 goal defeat is an embarrassment.
For BITS, as expected 'The Animal' ran riot and bullied the young Panthers defence kicking a staggering 20 goals. If he had of kicked straighter he could have had a lot more, 20 goals is still certainly a record from recent history and perhaps close to an all-time Capricornia AFL record. John wasn't the only BITS forward kicking bags of goals, he was well supported by star recruits Adam Rakip (13 goals) and Luke Tennant (6 goals). Liam Kronk, Matt Ryan and James Pepper battled hard.
Prediction: BITS by 67 points
Result: BITS by 253 points
Young Mark Summers struggles to run down Saints Luke Tennant.
GLADSTONE VS GLENMORE
This win for the Bulls may well prove to be very valuable come towards the end of the season. Any win against Gladstone at home is a well-earned win, while it is only Round 2 the Bulls are already showing that they are a vastly improved team from the one that won last year's Wooden Spoon.
Glenmore jumped out of the blocks early with 5 goals to Gladstone's 2 goals in the 1st quarter, from there the Mudcrabs had to play catch-up football for the rest of the day. The 2nd quarter saw both teams kick 7 goals, before Glenmore put the game beyond doubt kicking a further 7 goals to Gladstone's 1 goal in the Premiership quarter. The Mudcrabs continued to try hard in the last quarter kicking 5 goals to 1, but the damage had already been done, Glenmore winning by 5 goals.
For the home side Reece Sadleir starred at full-forward kicking 5 goals and was well supported by Jack Byrne (3 goals) and youngster Cam O'Grady (2 goals). For the Bulls Will Van Waveren was his team's best with 7 goals, while Tyson Payne kicked 3.
With 35 goals kicked in the game, there was not much defensive pressure applied by either team which meant for a very entertaining game for the spectators.
Prediction: Gladstone by 23 points
Result: Glenmore by 31 points
YEPPOON VS BROTHERS
As expected this was a tightly contested game and a wet ground and several downpours of rain throughout the game ensured it wasn't going to be prettiest football. Brothers looked to have picked up from last year's form dominating the 1st quarter and taking a comfortable 3 goal lead into the first break. The large home crowd were shocked and must have thought Brothers were going to run away with a comfortable win.
This wasn't the case, after quarter time the game turned into arm wrestle. The young and energetic Yeppoon defence started to get on top of the Brothers forwards and were repelling forward entries from the Roo's with ease. Kicking with the breeze in the 2nd quarter Brothers was unable to add a major while the Swans kicked 3 goals into the strong wind. Scores were tied at the major break.
The arm wrestle continued into the 3rd quarter with neither team able to break away, there was still only a 3 point margin at 3/4 time. Coming home with the breeze Brothers would have felt that they could deliver the winning goals in the last but they weren't able to. With only a couple minutes to go the margin was still only 3 points in Yeppoon's favour before Jarrod Lee stood up and kicked the winning goal.
Top performers for the Swans included Jarrod Lee (3 goals), Russell Sproule (3 goals), Matt Wallin and Sam Nicholls. For the Roos ever-green Steve Smithwick kicked 6 goals, while Rohan Davis, Adam Williams and Tom Granleese tried hard.
Prediction: Brothers by 17 points
Result: Yeppoon by 15 points
Hayden Bennett shows determination to apply pressure to Yeppoon's Trevor Robertson.
