Mouth Guards becoming compulsory
ACC receives over 300 basketball related dental claims each year, costing around $200,000 in treatment. There are also about 70 concussion related claims. Many of these injuries would be avoided through the use of a mouth guard.
In order to help reduce the number of basketball related injuries, mouth guards will become a compulsory part of playing basketball in New Zealand. A formal policy will be developed by BBNZ in the coming months. This will begin with the introduction of compulsory wearing of mouth guards for young people and eventually move to all grades.
These New Zealand made mouth guards have been especially designed for basketball. They are:
• thinner than normal, to aid communication between players on court
• available in three sizes – junior (7-10), youth (11-15), and senior (16+)
• easy to mold
• packaged in their own personal mouth guard box
To order please contact the Southland Basketball office.

Secondary School League Notes
Thank you to all schools for your entries; especially those that have sent in all the required paperwork (especially CSC and Fiordland College who have even provided us their player sheets already!).
We have finalised the draw structure and I will explain each grade in more detail below.
Grades & Draw Structures
Grades have been kept very much ‘as entered’, other than the Senior B Boys which due to an awesome number of entries we have split into two pools.
SIT Senior A Girls [4]: Bye Week + Round Robin x3 [10 weeks] + Semis + Finals
SIT Senior A Boys [5]: Round Robin x2 [10 weeks] + Semis + Finals
Senior B Girls [4]: Round Robin x3 [9 weeks] + Non Competition Week + Semis + Finals
Senior B Boys – Pool 1 [6]: Round Robin x2 [10 weeks] + Semis + Finals
Senior B Boys – Pool 2 [7]: Round Robin [7 weeks] + 3 weeks TBD + Semis + Finals
Junior A Girls [6]: Round Robin x2 [10 weeks] + Semis + Finals
Junior B Girls [4]: Round Robin x3 [9 weeks] + Non Competition Week + Semis + Finals
Junior A Boys [8]: Round Robin [7 weeks] + Split to A1 & A2 Grade – Round Robin [3 weeks] + Semis + Finals
Junior B Boys [4]: Round Robin x3 [9 weeks] + Non Competition Week + Semis + Finals
SIT Senior A Girls have a bye this first week due to multiple teams being affected by rep players being away; Senior B Boys Pool 2 draw structure to be determined after first round robin.
I will be compiling the full draw over the following weeks and hope to have this online before round two of the league. The .pdf file will initially sent out and posted online, in addition to the online Draws & Results page.
Notifications, Draw Changes & Results
As per last year, we have moved to an online Draws & Results system through FIBA Organizer and Sporting Pulse. This means that the draw and all results will be provided on our webpage, rather than being emailed out each week.
Any news or updates will be posted via our ‘News’ section and uploaded to the relevant page on the website. Draw changes and results will be synced to the ‘Draws & Results’ page. All notifications will also be posted via our Facebook page and Twitter.
Any urgent or important information / updates may still be emailed, but most of our communication will now be via the above means.
A quick how-to guide is attached re our Draws & Results page and I’m happy to answer any questions or walk you through it.
Photos & Social Media
We would love to get our players, supporters, schools etc. involved in contributing to our online content. If you have any information, photographs, videos, links etc. you would like us to share with the Southland Basketball online community please send them through.
Defaults
I am working on the draw to accommodate requests as many weeks as I can but due to court requirements and other school’s requests this may not always be possible. If your team/school thinks they may not be able to attend a game please let us know asap. This is only fair to our referees and other schools.
Senior A Boys – please note this is especially critical for Senior A Boys games as we are very excited this year to have Fiordland College entered in this grade. We don’t want them traveling such a long distance for teams not to turn up – so any issues with Senior A Boys games it’s essential you contact us and let us know.
That’s about all for now!! Best of luck to all schools and teams for a great 2013 competition, and as always, if you have any queries re the comp or wish to discuss any issues please don’t hesitate to contact us at the SBA office.

The Huddle - www. thehuddle.co.nz
Hello basketball supporter,
Today, at the Basketball New Zealand AGM, we launched The Huddle.
The Huddle is a club for supporters of our sport and will help us fund the high performance end of basketball.
If we want to have Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns and emerging Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns, we need to take responsibility for funding them ourselves. Since High Performance Sport dropped basketball last December, the need to fund our top teams now falls 100% on us.
The Huddle provides an opportunity for basketball fans to be part of the Tall Blacks and Tall Ferns story and also to help our younger talent who aspire to be our future international stars.
Take a look at www.thehuddle.co.nz – and become a supporter!
Best wishes,

WANT TO BE A SHARKS DANCER? AUDITIONS ON MARCH 9
The ZeroFees Southland Sharks are copying the lead of the NBA and holding auditions for dancers or cheerleaders for the 2013 season.
“All the top NBA and college teams do it, so we thought ‘why not’?” Sharks general manager Jill Bolger said. “Louise Horo (of Jazztime Studio ) is always on the lookout for talent and so this is a chance for someone she might not know about to show their stuff for her dance team.”
Bolger said the dancers added a bit more to the entertainment mix.
“There are so many things we could do, but we have a limited time to set them up at the quarter and half time breaks. Dancers are a nice easy entertainment option because all they need is a floor.”
Be a SHARKS Girl 2013 and perform at all home games
Audition – Saturday 9 March at 1pm
Venue: Jazztime Studio – 44 Mersey Street
Come prepared to dance.

Miniball Finals Draw - UPDATE 30/11
There has been a last minute update to the miniball finals draw - please check the online draws / results page for details or the .pdf which is downloadable from the Miniball page.
Miniball Finals Explanation
There have been a few queries regarding the finals week (and why some grades have finals and others don’t). Basically, each grade has a different make up due to the number of teams in each grade and the limited number of weeks we have to play.
The draw has been formulated as follows:
• Year 3 & 4 Boys: 6 teams = 2x 5 week round robin (10 weeks)…no finals, winner/runner up determined by end of full round standings
• Year 5 & 6 Mixed: 10 teams = 1x 9 week round robin + finals week (10 weeks)…finals format 1v2, 3v4 etc.
• Year 5 & 6 Boys (Pool 1): 9 teams = 1x 9 week round robin + finals week (10 weeks)…finals format 1v2, 3v4 etc.
• Year 5 & 6 Boys (Pool 2): 10 teams = 1x 9 week round robin + finals week (10 weeks)…finals format 1v2, 3v4 etc.
• Year 5 & 6 Girls (Pool 1): 5 teams = 2x 5 week round robin (10 weeks)…no finals, winner/runner up determined by end of full round standings
• Year 5 & 6 Girls (Pool 2): 6 teams = 2x 5 week round robin (10 weeks)… winner/runner up determined by end of full round standings
• Year 3 & 4 Mixed (Pool 1): 8 teams = 1x 7 week round robin (7), split into Top 4 / Bottom 4 (Plates)…top 4 have non competition week (1), then semi finals (1) + finals (1) = 10 weeks
• Year 3 & 4 Mixed (Pool 1 Plate): Bottom 4 of 7 week round robin play a 3 week round robin finals (10 weeks)…no finals, winner/runner up determined by end of full round standings
• Year 3 & 4 Mixed (Pool 2) ): 8 teams = 1x 7 week round robin (7), split into Top 4 / Bottom 4 (Plates)…top 4 have non competition week (1), then semi finals (1) + finals (1) = 10 weeks
• Year 3 & 4 Mixed (Pool 2 Plate): Bottom 4 of 7 week round robin play a 3 week round robin finals (10 weeks)…no finals, winner/runner up determined by end of full round standings
We only have 10 weeks in a miniball competition and as a result did not have the 11th week that would have been needed to play a finals round in some grades.
