Butchers desperate to stop the rot

Illawarra Mercury 29/05/2014

Thirroul captain Nathan Fien says Friday's match with Dapto shapes as a dangerous one for his side as they look to avoid three consecutive losses.

After setting the pace throughout the first round, the Butchers slumped to third on the ladder with losses to Collegians and Helensburgh.

Fien missed the loss to Helensburgh last week with a niggling calf injury but will return for Friday's match as the Butchers look to arrest the slide that followed their 26-20 win over Wests in round five.

"After that big game a few weeks ago [against Wests] it just seems like we've taken our foot off the pedal a bit," Fien said.

"I thought we were right in that game [against Helensburgh]. We were mixing it with them and trading set for set and I thought they were probably as tired as we were at times.

"I thought we were pretty brave actually. We were a few troops down and they just played really well.

"We had our opportunities but you've got to take them.

"Burgh and Thirroul are always tough slogs but they just took their opportunities and we didn't.

"It's certainly not panic stations but we definitely need to look at a few things to try and get back into the winner's circle.

"It is a big game for us this week. Obviously Dapto are playing for their lives now and we need to get back into the winner's circle and stop this slide after a really good first round," Fien said.

"I think they're a better side than what people are giving them credit for and what their results have been this season.

"It's definitely a tough game and we can't afford to take them lightly coming off the back of two losses.

Corrimal host leaders Helensburgh at Zeims Park on Saturday while Collegians will be at home to Wests on Sunday.
