Illawarra-Cronulla under 17s competition

Illawarra Coal: CSJRLFL

The strategic initiative to reshape competition structures below senior levels is continuing to see a positive response from clubs within the Illawarra district and beyond.

The Port Kembla club have committed to working hard to confirm a team participating in the new under 17 competition and have appointed the well-known Jason Sullivan as coach. Jason is committed to developing a competitive team for the Blacks and has welcomed all interested players.

Further to this, on-going discussions over several weeks have seen a meeting today from representatives of Illawarra and Cronulla-Sutherland junior competitions and CRLNSW to agree in principle on a joint competition in the under 17s for 2014. This ground breaking initiative will see the door open for between 2 to 4 clubs from the Cronulla-Sutherland District Junior Rugby Football League to join the six clubs who have nominated to date from within the Illawarra district.

Director of Illawarra Rugby League Bob Millward, OAM expressed his support for this joint initiative following the meeting today. “As a game we need to be conscious that the world around us has changed and with that come challenges in maintaining strong viable competitions in junior Rugby League. I commend the strategic view of both junior league bodies and their commitment to implementing change for the betterment of the game as a whole.”

Cronulla- Sutherland DJRLF Secretary Judd O’Shea has led the move from Cronulla juniors to seek entry into a joint competition with the Illawarra Coal Junior Rugby League. “The Cronulla Junior League executive are excited about the welcoming response from the Illawarra district to our approach as we see many synergies across our leagues which we feel will see a very viable joint competition. We are committed to providing our players with access to the best possible competitions and this joint initiative will deliver our participating clubs with some great new Rugby League experiences. Both parties are keen to ensure the needs of both junior leagues are well respected and catered for under this unique arrangement. We look forward to finalising a Memorandum of Understanding in the coming days”.

Clubs nominating for the new under 17 competition were Helensburgh, Thirroul, a combined Woonona/Corrimal team, Collegians, Dapto, Port Kembla, with several others declaring expressions of interest.
