Illawarra Coal Shield Grand Final
Corrimal retained their Illawarra Coal Shield premiership with a convincing 25-6 win against Northern Suburbs in the Grand Final at WIN Stadium on Sunday.
The Cougars took an early lead when centre Matt Ryan scored in the seventh minute and converted his own try from near the touchline.
Ten minutes later the Bulldogs equalised when centre Ben Field scored and halfback Jarryd Ward added the extras.
From then on the Cougars did all the scoring, recording 19 unanswered points.
Corrimal co-captain and second-rower Scott Ryan forced his way over for a try then a long pass put Matt Ryan across for his second try of the match and the Cougars led 14-6 at half-time.
When powerful forward Clint Hill crashed over six minutes into the second half, the Cougars were on their way to retaining their title and increased their lead to 22-6 with a try to five-eighth Mitch Todman which was converted by Matt Ryan.
A great kick/chase by Corrimal coach and winger Luke Stafford had the Bulldogs under the pump but they recovered well.
Hill and Scott Ryan combined with a midfield break to force a goal line drop out by Norths.
Two minutes from full-time, Corrimal forward Andrew Atkins was sin binned but it didn’t matter as the result was all wrapped up.
As the full-time siren blared out, Cougars five-eighth Adam Kerr kicked a field goal for a 25-6 victory.
Hill was the recipient of the Illawarra Coal Shield Player of the Grand Final award.
