Wests qualify for grand final in thriller
A try to Ryan King eight minutes into the second period of extra time earned Wests a 30-26 golden point win over Dapto in a thrilling Illawarra Coal League under 18 final at Collegians Sports Centre yesterday.
This was King’s second try in an entertaining match and was scored in the 13th minute of golden point time after neither side was able to snap a field goal to break the 26-all full-time deadlock.
All up, the boys played 83 minutes consisting of 35 minutes each way and 13 minutes of extra time.
Dapto led 14-4 with 19 minutes to go in regular time when Wests five-eighth Paora Kemp scored, converted by winger Tom Bartley, to trim the margin to four points.
Two minutes later Wests took the lead 16-14 when Bartley scored under the crossbar and converted his own try, then three minutes later the Devils went further ahead off a Dapto dropped bomb in the Canaries’ own in-goal and King was on the spot to score his first try and Bartley added the extras.
Suddenly Wests were ahead 26-14 when centre Luke McBriarty scored a runaway try.
In the 65th minute Dapto’s Cameron Davis scored and five-eighth Shannon Bonnie converted to reduce the Devils’ lead to a converted try at 26-20.
With two minutes to go, Canaries halfback Dillon Capaan scored next to the posts and Bonnie’s conversion levelled the scores 26-all.
Bonnie missed a late penalty goal attempt and the two sides were into golden point before King’s second try sent Wests into the grand final against Shellharbour, kicking off at 10.15am on Sunday at WIN Stadium.
