Cougars claw Tigers lead back
Despite finishing the regular season six competition points ahead of the Cougars, Corey Whitaker’s Helensburgh Tiger-Lillies’ should be prepared for some strong opposition this weekend when they do battle with the Corrimal Cougars at the Collegians Sporting Complex.
The Tiger-Lillies went through last season as undefeated Premiers, and looked like they were going to repeat the achievement this year. That was until the Cougars did what so many other teams have been unable to do, beating the ‘Burgh on their own turf.
The Cougars won the match 20-16 in a typical tale of David and Goliath. For three years the Tiger-Lillies have dominated the Illawarra Women’s competition, and finally, they were defeated- albeit by four points.
The Cougars will carry the support of the list of also-ran teams from the past three seasons as they take on a star-studded Helensburgh team which will feature the returning Australian Jillaroos stars who successfully defeated the New Zealand Kiwi Ferns in the Women’s Rugby League World Cup last month.
While the Tiger-Lillies will enter the match a hot favourites, the Cougars girls know that they have what it takes to beat their fearsome opposition. The loser of the match will face last year's runner-up- the Western Suburbs She-Devils- in the Final.
