Wests and Shellharbour to contest inaugural Nicole Fitzsimons Trophy this Friday night
This weekend kicks off the highly anticipated 2013 Illawarra Coal Rugby League season, however also holds particular significance for two clubs from the Illawarra.
Nicole Fitzsimons, the deceased partner 2012 Shellharbour Sharks pivot Jamie Keith, tragically lost her life while on holiday in Thailand in 2012. Nicole was an active member of the State and National Rugby League community, working as a media official for Channel 9's 'The Footy Show', as well as broadcasting NSW Cup matches on radio.
As a mark of respect to Nicole's family, Shellharbour and Wests- clubs which Keith has played for with great esteem- have agreed to mark their round 1 match-up by contesting the inaugural Nicole Fitzsimons Trophy this Friday night.
Wests Illawarra RLFC Secretary Dave Arthur this week said, "it was decided that this would be a fitting tribute by our clubs for Nicole."
"Jamie and Nicole's sister, Kate, will be setting up a marquee at the entrance to Sid Parish Park with Nicole Fitzsimons material for purchase," Arthur said.
Jamie, and the Nicole Fitzsimon's Foundation team will be hoping to raffle off a number of prizes throughout the evening, with all money to be directly allocated to this wonderful organization.
It is also hoped that there will be some media coverage by 'The Footy Show' at the match, with some St. George Illawarra Dragons players lined up to attend the match, which is scheduled to kick off at 8:15 on Friday night.
