Illawarra Women's decider
Wests edge out Corrimal to make the Open Women’s Rugby League
In what proved a dour contest Wests Illawarra have made their way to WIN Stadium next
Saturday to meet Helensburgh in the Grand Final.
The first half saw some solid defense as both Wests and Corrimal showed their
determination to make the final game until a serious injury to Corrimal player Tylah
Buckley late in the first half took the momentum out of the Cougars’ game.
The second half also proved to be a tussle with many opportunities lost by both teams
through lack of completion rates.
In the end the only difference was one conversion.
Wests 6 (Robyn Moylan 1T 1G) defeated Corrimal 4 (Jade Etherden T)
The grand final is scheduled for:
Saturday, 4 August - Kick-Off - 1.30pm
Helensburgh vs Wests Illawarra - WIN Stadium
Entry through Gate C - $5 entry fee
District Administrator, Julie Nicoll said “It was great timing to be able to play the Women’s
Grand Final on WIN Stadium as a precursor to the Illawarra Cutters vs Mounties fixture
and give the girls a taste of what the premier pitch in Wollongong is like”
“The competition is growing well with plans being considered to expand into the full version
of the game with 13 a side. There are also two more teams mooted for next season.
Helensburgh remain the benchmark, which isn’t surprising considering they supplied five
of the seven debutantes in the NSW WRL representative side, but Wests Illawarra were
able to contain them for most of the game in the major finals so anything is possible.”
