30,000 brightly coloured critters have set up camp at Life Saving Victoria HQ and will be looking to head straight across the beach and down to the water in anticipation of their big event, The 2009 Great Australia Day Duck Race.
In case you're concerned - don't be. The ducks in question aren't your ordinary duck. For one they don't fly, or quack about and if you're really lucky a friendly one might even win you a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback!
Parks Victoria Officers, Lifesavers, and representatives from Mitsubishi and the Australia Day Committee (Victoria) will be on hand to ensure the ducks are counted and ready to go as they begin their training regime for the great race.
The smiling, rubber lifesaving ducks numbered 1 to 30 000 will be let loose on the Yarra River as part of the Australia Day celebrations in the city.
The aim is to adopt a duck for yourself, family or friends and watch on and cheer as the ducks are let loose in a frenzy of colour as they battle it out down the Yarra River before the triumphant duck wins its owner a brand new Mitsubishi Lancer Sports Hatchback, the all new hatch.
With each duck costing $5 and proceeds from the race going to help lifesavers in Victoria the race is set to again be a hugely popular feature of the Australia Day weekend celebrations.
So while the ducks begin their training on the beach, get online or call Life Saving Victoria to adopt your very own racing duck - and you never know you might drive away a very happy duck owner!
