Mount Martha Life Saving Club is pleased to run Starfish Nippers. Starfish Nippers is a modified Nipper Program for children and young adults with special needs, that is included with our traditional Nipper Program.
The Starfish Nipper program was created by the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club. The program is now operating at many life saving clubs in Victoria. Janet Jones from Anglesea SLSC has created a program that caters for children and young adults ranging from 6 years and above with special needs - including autism, attention deficit disorder, Down’s syndrome, Asperger's Syndrome, physical and intellectual disabilities and learning difficulties. The Anglesea Nipper Program was greatly enhanced by the addition of the Starfish Program, and we hope that it will be a wonderful addition to MMLSC Nippers. We are grateful to have access to their program resources.
Activities for our Starfish Nippers include the traditional beach games and activities, beach running, beach flags, swimming, board skills, water familiarisation, beach, water and surf safety. We will join other Age Groups for some fun relays and games. We have an instructor for every nipper, a ratio of 1 nipper per trainer for beach activities and in some cases 2 trainers in the water activities depending on the nipper’s ability. This ensures the program can be specially tailored to meet individual needs and skill levels in and out of the water, we offer positive instruction and encouragement along the way. However, we do have a policy which stipulates that a parent or carer must be on the beach at all times while the session is being run in case additional assistance is required.
Sessions will run on Friday evenings 6-7pm included in the Nipper Program.
Enrolments for 2018/19 Starfish Nippers season will open in September. Current members can renew from 1st September and new members can enrol from 14th September. The program will have limited spots to ensure we can maintain our extremely high standards of water safety and quality instruction so please enrol quickly to avoid disappointment.
Please note that ALL Nipper Parents are required to hold a Working With Children Check
