Round 3

League Women - Uni Rebels v Ansett

Ansett denied the Uni Rebels any hope they may have had of winning their match as the Blues jumped off to a 21-10 first quarter lead on their way to a final 82-43 victory. By half time the Blues had extended their lead out to 38-19 and had the game well in hand. Tal Yakov, Alison Fleming, Carolyn Nyhouse and Ruta Valiulyte all hit double figures for the Blues who ran their early season unbeaten streak to 3. Yakov finished with a game high 21, Fleming 14, Nyhouse 11 and Valiulyte 10. For the Rebels Danielle Ponter hit 16 while Toya Norris added 12 and Kristal Tak 9.

Razzle Storm v Palmerston Power

Palmerston Power staged a second half ‘come-from-behind’ 67-53 winner over the Razzle Storm for their first win of the season. The Storm had stormed out to a narrow 32-30 half time lead through some accurate shooting by Erin Boyd and Lailani Triffitt, but they couldn’t hold on after the break. The third quarter proved pivotal as the Power as a team followed the lead of Brittany Ward and Brielle Felton to take control of the game by running off 25 points to just 6 for a 17 point lead heading into the last quarter (55-38). Ward finished up with 24 points, Louise Turner hit 11 and Brielle Felton 10. Boyd hit 24 for the Storm with Triffitt adding with 14.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The Eagles surprised the Tracy Village Jets with a solid 77-68 win. Ieasha Friel (24.6ppg) led the way for the Eagles with a game high 31 points (including 4 treys). The Jets had powered out to a 21-14 lead after one quarter of play and looked like they would continue on to another win, but the Eagles regrouped and stole the momentum to slip past the Jets with a 28-16 second quarter run that gave the Birds a 42-38 lead and the possibility of winning the game. The third quarter was a standoff with each team scoring only 9pts! The Eagles took the last quarter 26-21 and of their points 17 of them came from the free throw line as the Jets scrambled to get possession of the ball. Edith Boundry & Tulahah Jeffrey (15ppg) both hit 5 from the charity stripe to insure the Eagle win. Jeffrey finished with 15 points and Boundry 13. Erin Geer (19.3ppg) hit 28 for the Jets with Kylie Duggan (13ppg) & Delsey Ah Wang getting 11 apiece.

Round 4

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Upset!! Tal Yakov from Ansett dropped in two free throws with just seven seconds remaining in the game to hand defending champ Tracy Village Jets their second consecutive loss in a nail biting 64-63 finish at the DBA Stadium on Saturday night. Yakov (22.3ppg) also finished up with a game and season high 29 points for the Blues who remain undefeated at 4-0. The Jets had not lost back to back games since 18 October 2011. This game was worthy of championship finals action with the teams trading the lead often during the encounter. There was never more than 10 points between them, more often than not it was just a basket or two. As the game wound down it was still up in the air. Danielle Totham hit a pair of free throws with 24 seconds remaining to give the Jets a 1 point 63-62 lead, but Yakov stepped up at the end to nail her two freebies from the charity stripe to win the game for the Blues. Heart stopping stuff. Yakov had help from Remi Watts-Smith on 9 and Ruta Valiulyte (10.6ppg) on 8. The Jets had four in double figures with Kylie Duggan on 12, Tania Dhu & Erin Geer on 11 and Delsey Ah Wang 10.

Palmerston Power v Uni Rebels

Brittany Ward (24.5ppg) put up a game and season high 29 points to lead the Palmerston Power over the undermanned Uni Rebels 108-21. The crushing win by the Power gave them a share of third place on the ladder. Ward had support from Chiara Jones (21), Louise Turner (20 @ 15.5ppg), Brielle Felton (17) and Mikaella Desamito (14). Best for the Rebels was Toya Norris with 8.

Razzle Storm v Lightning

The Razzle Storm got their first win of the season at the expense of the Lightning 57-49. A stellar game from the Storm’s Lailani Triffitt (10.5ppg) who hit a season high 25 sparked the win for the Storm. The Lightning posted a 26-20 half time lead before the Storm began to roll back into contention. A 25-16 run in the third quarter proved to be the game winner as the Storm shot to the lead and then kept up the momentum in the last quarter to register the victory. Triffitt had support from Erin Boyd (19.5ppg) with 9 points while the Lightning were led by Samantha Wilson with 13, Kira Pendlebury (9ppg) with 12 and Peta Bailey with 10.

   Round 3

League Men – Razzle Storm v Palmerston Power

A highly engrossing game between the Palmerston Power and the Razzle Storm was won eventually by the Power 83-78. Nothing separated the teams as they battled it out for the whole game. Game was tied 40 all at half time, 58-57 at the end of three quarters with the Storm ahead and then with only 4:30 left in the game the Power managed to gain the lead at 72-71 after a basket by new recruit Willie Shackleford. The Power were never headed after that despite the Storm fighting to the end. They (Storm) only trailed by 3 with eleven seconds remaining after a trey by Daniel Calcatera, but Ben Streeter ended it all by dropping a pair of free throws for the Power for the win. Kyle Keirnan led the Power with a season and game high 27, Shackleford finished with 22, Aaron Simpson 12 and Streeter 10. High scorers for the Storm were Calcatera & Freddy Williams with 24 each with Chris Mahlstredt adding 17.

Ansett v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels edged past Ansett 86-73 to claim their second win of the comp. The game was locked up at 40 all at half time before the Rebels began to edge away from the Blues. A third quarter 28-20 run gave the Rebels a slight buffer and they maintained that advantage for the remainder of the game, the Blues never got closer than 8pts during the last quarter. Tim Morris hit a season and game high 38 with back-up from Spencer Coleman 22 and Jake Kirby 13. Five Blues hit double figures; Robert Skinner 18, Max Davies 13, Jerron Jamerson & Brad Davis 12 and Jai O’Shaughnessy 10.

Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

The third quarter again proved a turning point in this round of games for the match won by the Eagles over the Tracy Village Jets 86-70. The Eagles led by seven at 25-18 after a quarter of play and boosted that to 45-36 after two, but the third quarter really turned the game in favour of the Birds as they outscored the Jets 27-12 in a match winning effort. The Jets did lift in the last quarter during a 22-14 run, but the challenge fell way short of what was needed to steal the win. Zac Williams-Hook top scored for the Birds with 22, Jordan Sing hit 19, Anthony Golden 15 and David Oates 13. Darrin Weetra led the Jets with 27 and Jayden Adams hit 10

Essington Cannons v Lightning

The Essington Cannons outlasted the Lighting for a 93-87 victory to get back onto the tracks after last week’s loss. Fisto Bizima hit a game high 29 as the Cannons fought back from an eight point half time deficit. They trailed 39-31, but went on a scoring rampage in the third quarter to outgun the Lightning 38-27 for a 69-66 lead with a quarter to play. The game see-sawed for about half of the quarter before Jake Eyles from the Cannons hit a trey to break a 75 each tie for a 78-75 lead which they never relinquished. Cameron Bailey hit a bucket with 5:44 left to play to get the Lightning within 1 at 78-77, but the scoring stopped for a full three minutes and while that happened to the Lightning the Cannons kept adding points and moving away for the win. Bizima had help from Travis Ellis who had 25, Lachlan Shipway 18 and Eyles who finished with 13. Shaquille Hohipa-Wilson led the Lightning with 24, Jesse Bell 21, Bailey with 16 and Chris Charman on 15 (5 treys).

Round 4

Essington Cannons v Eagles

The Eagles flew above the Essington Cannons for a 97-82 victory to remain undefeated so far this season (4-0). The Birds trailed for most of the game, lagging behind 71-68 after three quarters of play. After regrouping and stealing the momentum from the Cannons they went on a scoring spree that took them from trailing to leading and eventually winning after a run of 29 points to just 11 for the Cannons. It was a huge scoring swing for the Eagles led by Anthony Golden (29.5ppg) who hit 28 points for the game. He had help from Kevin Woolley with 23, Zach William-Hook 19 @ 20.5ppg and Jordan Sing 15. The Cannons Fisto Bizima (27.7ppg) led all scorers with 32 while Travis Ellis (24ppg) hit 22 and Lachlan Shipway 12.

Palmerston Power v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels led from start to finish in their 78-63 win against the Palmerston Power. Spencer Coleman and Tim Morris (28.7ppg) racked up 48 points between them to lead the charge with Glenn Scott chipping in with 11. The 17-14 first quarter lead blew out to 43-29 after a 26-15 second quarter run and the Rebels held on to that advantage for the rest of the game. Coleman (23.5ppg) finished up with 26 and Morris 22. Willie Shackleford (18.6ppg) netted 22 for the losers with Tom Godwin adding 11.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Jerron Jamerson hit a League high 48 points to propel Ansett to a big 112-90 win over the Tracy Village Jets. The Blues came out firing from the start to take a 26-15 first quarter lead and kicked on in the second quarter with a 30-14 run for a huge 27 point lead at the half 56-29. Although the Jets kept on fighting to outscore the Blues in the second half 61-56 it wasn’t enough to get back into the game with any chance of winning. Jamerson (26.6ppg) had plenty of help from Robert Skinner (21) and Brad Davis & Matthew Haniford (14 each). Five Jets hit double figures with Dante Ah Sam leading the way with 19, Darrin Weetra 17 @ 16.6ppg, Jason O’Donoghue 16, Jackson Tremlett 11 and Joel Stevens 10.

Razzle Storm v Lightning
