Men Round 17

League Men – Palmerston v Razzle

The Palmerston Power have tied the Uni Rebels for top spot in League competition with a resounding 109-57 win over the Razzle on Sunday afternoon. With only one game remaining the Power have an opportunity that has never before been their good luck to have. Their game against the Rebels next Friday night will crown one of them as minor premiers, a title the Power have never had. Palmerston took advantage of a disqualifying foul against Rob Oliver (12.5ppg) of the Razzle near the end of the first quarter to storm away with the game and a possible date with history. Oliver and Tom Godwin from Palmerston got into a fracas leading to both players being ejected from the game, unfortunately for the Razzle Oliver was their top scorer. Jesse Bell (21.2ppg) was best on court for the Power with a game high 31 points and countless assists to some of the younger players on the roster who got plenty of court time. Fisto Bizima (4.3ppg) added 26 (including 4 treys), Aaron Simpson 15 and Jamie Thorne 10. David Carroll (10ppg) & Nathan Radonich (10.6ppg) led the Razzle with 21 each.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets slipped past the Uni Rebels 55-53 to hand the Rebels their 4th loss in the last 5 matches putting them into the unenviable position of having to win next week against the Palmerston Power to retain their minor premiership title. The Jets played this one very close and pulled the rabbit out of the hat at the end of the game. The Rebels built up what appeared to be an insurmountable 22-12 first quarter lead, but the Bombers scrambled back into contention behind the play of Michael MacLean and Travis Ellis. MacLean (9.5ppg) gave the Jets the lead with 6 straight points in the last 1:40 of the third quarter to post a 46-43 advantage with a quarter to go. The Rebels got within 1 point a number of times, but the Jets hung on with Ellis and MacLean dropping in free throws at the end of the game to ice it. The win boosted the Jets into third place on the ladder. Ellis (22.1ppg) finished with 18pts, Jett Sukcharoen 12 and MacLean 11. For the Rebels Thomas Uppena (13.8ppg) had 19 and Jake Kirby 15.

Ansett v Lightning

Ansett laid the ground work for a decisive 100-75 win over the Lightning in the first quarter of their match with an explosive 28-11 run. This game wasn’t supposed to be a blow-out, but a possible achillies tendon rupture to Lightning point guard Chris Charman in the quarter did not help their cause at all. Five players from the Blue’s camp hit double figures with John King (20.8ppg) netting 26, Jake Feeney 17, Matteo Rowse 15 and Fred Webb & Joseph Stewart 13 each. Craig Martin (25ppg) from Lightning hit a season and league high 42 despite constant pressure from the Blues inside the keyway. Cameron Bailey chipped in with 14 and Tony Halikos 10. Ansett still has a slim outside change of getting into fourth place, but need to win against the Jets on Thursday and hope that the Razzle can upset the Eagles which looks highly improbable.

Ladder:  Uni Rebels & Palmerston Power 11-4, Tracy Village Jets 8-7, Eagles 7-7, Lightning & Ansett 6-8 & Razzle 1-12

Next week Round 16:     Thursday – Ansett v Tracy Village Jets 8:00pm. Friday – Eagles v Razzle 6:30, Palmerston Power v Uni Rebels 8:00pm, Bye – Lightning

Make-up game on Friday the 13th:    Lightning v Razzle @ 8pm
