League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Eagles

Tracy Village ran their win streak out to 13 with an 84-40 win against their nearest rivals, the Eagles. Abby Cubillo (26.8ppg) knocked down 10 of her game high 26 in the first quarter as the Bombers lifted off for a 19-8 first quarter lead that only increased with each successive quarter of play. By half time the score had blown out to 38-14. Kylie Duggan (16.8ppg) and Sam Rioli (16.3ppg) lent support to Cubillo with 15 and 13 points respectively while Lillian Williams (10.7ppg) hit 14 and Kimberly Brown 12 for the Eagles. The Jets are the only League team in the competition, men or women that remain undefeated so far this season.

Lightning v Ansett

Lightning pipped Ansett at the post with a nail biting 26-25 victory that is only their second win of the season. The game was won from the free throw line as time wound down on a tense, hard fought match that was close all the way. Cindy Bulich (9.7ppg) led the Lightning with 8 points and none were more valuable than the last two that she potted from the charity stripe near the end of the game. Both sides were missing a number of starters from their line-ups, but it didn’t detract from an exciting match-up between the teams.

League Men – Ansett v Uni Rebels

Donte Nicholas and Daniel Florance combined for 55 points to lead Ansett to an upset 78-73 victory over the previously undefeated Uni Rebels. The pair were instrumental in putting the break’s on the Rebel winning streak and in doing so set themselves up as potential grand finalists at the end of the season. Nicholas (32.6ppg) hit a game high 36 points while Florance (16.3ppg) backed him up with 19. The Blues had to scramble back from a 41-31 half time deficit to win the game and they did it behind the brilliance of Nicholas who stood out in the third quarter as the Blues pulled ahead by one point to lead 57-56 with a quarter to play. Florance then took over to hit 11 of his total in the last quarter to assure the Blues of victory. The Rebels got their usual bundle of points from John King (34 @ 27.8ppg) and Tim Morris (16 @ 27.7ppg), but they fell just short of continuing that winning streak. The two teams meet again next Friday with first place on the line.

Eagles v Lightning

The Eagles pinned back the Lightning 88-77 as they slipped past two teams on the ladder to now occupy fourth place on percentage points. Reece Turner (19.1ppg) hit 18 of his 22pts in the first half to help the Birds to a 38-32 advantage and then turned the scoring duties over to Chris Hart (21.8ppg) and James Silvie (25.5ppg) who kept the Lightning at bay with efforts. New recruit Deola Folarin knocked down 40 points in his first foray onto the court in a Lightning uniform although it was in a losing effort. Folarin hit 25 out of the Lightning’s last 30 points in the game! Hart finished up with 27 for the Eagles while Silvie added 18. Cameron Bailey & Craig Martin hit 11 each for the Lightning.

The Bombers powered out to a 41-28 half time lead and after the break continued to add on to their score line while shutting down the Razzle’s efforts to get back into the game.
