League Women – Eagles v Uni Rebels

The Eagles flew circles around the UniRebels during a 61-37 rout to claim outright possession of third place on the ladder after 8 rounds of play in the DBA Championship Season. The Saturday game was one of 4 make-up games that were cancelled from the previous weekend. The teams were locked on identical win/loss records prior to the game. The first half was a tussle with the Rebels holding a slight 24-21 lead at the half time break, but it was all Eagles in the second half. The Birds came out firing and lifted their defense as they rattled off 40 points to just 13 during the second half blitz. Michelle Friel (18), Elyse Videon (11) and Katherine Hollis (9) drove the Birds to victory during the rally, combining for 31 of the Eagles points as they powered home for the win. Lucy Adam topped scored for the Rebels with 17.

Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Tracy Village Jets got off to a great start in their close 67-60 win against Ansett. The Villagers thundered away in the first quarter with a 20-8 run that had the Blues backpeddaling and looking for answers. Sam Rioli hit 7 of her 17 points during the quarter with Georgii Howlett chipping in with 4 of her team high 18. Ansett was floundering, but managerd to regroup in the second quarter behind Lauren Flanagan who nailed three treys during a 26-11 run buy the Blues that put them in front 34-31 at the break. Flanagan hit 12 of her team and game high 20 during that run. After the break the Bombers took charge throughHowlett , overcoming the Blues and then doggedly hanging on for the victory despite the efforts from Kia Bond, Flanagan and Sam Dresher (18) in the last quarter.

League Men –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

Ansett overcame a one point Tracy Village Jets lead aftetr one quarter of play grab a share of the top rung on the DBA ladder after 8 rounds of play. The Blues unceremoniously dumped the frontrunning Bombers 97-67 handing them their biggest loss in years. The Bombers were without two of their workhorse players in captain Michael Maclean and Daniel Miller, but the margin of the win was completely unimaginable. Daniel Florance led the attack for the Blues with 22 points followed by Chris Dunlop with 19, Tom Blake with 16 and Matt Hunt with 13. Travis Ellis (25) and Liam MacLachlan (18) put up a good fight for the Bombers but there wasn’t much support after that. Both teams are now 5-2 and at the top of the ladder with Lightning just a half game behind with a game in hand at 5-1.

Lightning v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels are making their presence felt as they take up the challenge to lift another Championship season trophy. They dumped the undefeated Lightning 68-63 for their third win in a row and they now have all their imports in place and they are reaping the benefits. Justin Eckhardt topped the scoring for the Rebels with a game high 25 with newcomers David Mecanovic and Lachlan Headlam adding 11 and 13. The match was a game of contrasts in every quarter with Lightning in front after one 15-9 and then the Rebels knotting it all up at 33 apiece at half time after a 24-18 run led by Eckhardt and Mecanovic. Lightning slipped away in the third quarter to hold a 59-49 lead with a quarter to go and then watched that lead disappear under the relentless pressure from the Rebels as they took off on a 19-4 run that ended with a win and their first appearance this season in the top four on the ladder. Zac White notched up 19 for Lightning with Tony Godwin on 16 and Jesse Bell on 15.
