Round 13

League Women -  Lightning v Ansett

Ansett held off a second half rally by Lightning to claim their fifth win of the competition 62-54 to grab a tenuous hold on fourth place on the ladder with three games remaining before playoffs begin. The Blues have a very hard road home with one game v the Uni Rebels and two v the Jets…so this win was a must win if they are to have a chance of a playoff game. The Blues scorched the Lightning in the first half to lead 41-24 at the break, but the Lightning bounced back in the second half with a torrid third quarter run of 20-6 to trail by just 3 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Blues put up the first points in the last quarter and never were headed despite the effort by the Lightning. Georgia Dawson and Peta Bailey kept the Lightning in with a chance, but every time they got close they were stopped by a three pointer from Tamiyah Perkins (who hit 9pts in the last 5 minutes of play). Perkins (12.4ppg) led the Blues with her season best of 21 points (including 6 treys) and she had plenty of help from Carolyn Nyhouse 11 @ 14.8ppg, and Clancy Dorman & Ruta Valiulyte with 10 each. Peta Bailey (who plays her 300th game next week) hit a season high 21 @ 8ppg for the Lighting with Dominique Carbone (14.4ppg) adding 15.

Razzle Storm v Eagles

Ieasha Friel (28.5ppg) continued to dominate offensively for the Eagles as she hit 32 points to once again lead the Birds to victory, this time a 65-57 win against the Razzle Storm. The Birds were in a battle royal with the Storm who are in a race with Ansett for the final playoff spot and needed to win. The Storm were up by one point at half time 27-26, led 47-44 at the start of the last quarter, but then fell away as the Birds swooped. The Eagles ran off 13 points to just 2 for the Storm in 4 minutes to grab momentum inspired by Alysha-Marie Williams and Michelle Friel (12ppg). With 5 minutes remaining the Birds led 60-51 and kept that gap until the last minute of the game. Williams hit a season high of 14 in support of Friel while for the Storm Erin Boyd (13ppg) hit 21, and Lailani Triffitt 14.

Tracy Village Jets v Uni Rebels

The Tracy Village Jets flew away from the tenacious Uni Rebels in the second half of their game to win easy 86-65. The Rebels were still in with a chance by the end of three quarter time trailing by only seven points with a quarter to play 56-49. The last quarter however, belonged to the Jets who posted 30 points to just 16 for the Rebels as the Jets steadily pulled away for their 11th win of the season. Kylie Duggan (14.3ppg) kicked her ‘points per game’ average up from 13.3 to 14.4 with a game high 25 points, her best of the season followed by 16 from Tania Dhu, 15 from Erin Geer (10.4pg) and 12 by Delsey Ah Wang. The Jets are once again looking a bit more like the team to beat for the championship. Jasmyn Hewett (13.1ppg) led the Rebels with 18, Jaylene Bonson (15.4ppg) had 16 and Danielle Ponter 12.

Men

League Men – HPP v Razzle Storm

HPP shut out the Razzle Storm with a powerhouse 105-94 win that firmly consigns the Storm to the cellar…still winless. HPP started out like gangbusters, running up 27 points to 15 in the first quarter as Freddy Webb and Jai O’Shaughnessy (11.3ppg) spearheaded the HPP attack. But the Storm rolled it all back in the second quarter as they lit up the scoreboard in the last 7:32 of the quarter. Trailing 34-15 with that time on the clock everything went the Storms way as they outscored the HPP 30-13 to peg the score back to 47-45 at half time. The surge was all down to the effort from Chris Mahlstedt (17.5ppg) who hit 15 of his game high 41 during that 7 minutes. The youngsters from HPP just kept up the pressure however, and it took its toll on the undermanned Storm as they slowly slipped further behind. O’Shaughnessy led the HPP with a season high 27, Webb (15.7ppg) finished with 21, Max Davies (15.1ppg) hit 15 and Fisto Bizima 11. Backing up Mahlstedt was Karsten Oltrop (8.6ppg) with a season high 26 and Brendan Dell on 18.

Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Spencer Coleman & Tim Morris (32.1ppg) combined for 74 points to power the Uni Rebels to a thumping 109-56 win over the Tracy Village Jets. The duo was unstoppable in and around the keyway and also helped themselves to 14 points from the charity stripe too. The Rebels charged out to a 23-12 first quarter lead, pumped it up to a 16 point advantage at the half 46-30 and blew the Jets away in the second half with a 63-26 run. Coleman (25ppg) tallied 38 and Morris 36 while Travis Ellis chipped in with 12. The Jets got 16 from Jake Geer (10.1ppg), 12 from Jayden Adams (10.7ppg) and 10 from Jett Sukcharoen.

Lightning v Ansett

Five players hit double figures for Ansett as the Blues dumped the Lightning 97-77 to hang on to second place on the ladder with just two games remaining before playoffs. Lightning held a slim two point 19-17 lead after a quarter of play, but an explosive three-point assault by the Blues in the second quarter (6) changed the whole complexion of the game. The momentum shifted to the Blues with Jerron Jamerson (34.6ppg) & Jai O’Shaughnessy nailing 5 treys between them as they outshot the Lightning 30-19 to take control at the break 49-36. They were never headed after that. Jamerson hit a team and game high 29, Mitch O’Donoghue 18, Freddy Webb & Max Davies 15 each and O’Shaughnessy 10. Austin Kisselev (26ppg) shared game high honour’s with Jamerson as he led the Lightning with 29, Cameron Bailey (10.8ppg) hit 20 and Dylan De Santis 17.

Palmerston Power v Eagles

The league leading Eagles used a second quarter surge to break away from the Palmerston Power for a comprehensive 90-64 victory to keep a firm grip on first place on the ladder. The Eagles led by one point at 17-16 after one quarter but spread their wings in the second quarter with a 25-6 run that put them in the driver’s seat. The Birds outscored the Power 15-3 in the first 7 minutes of the second quarter and only allowed two treys by the Power for the quarter. At the half it was 42-22, by three quarter time it was 64-37 with the Birds soaring away into the sunset. Anthony Golden (31.3ppg) tallied 28 for the Eagles (including 6 treys), Jordan Sing (11.4ppg) hit 21, Jesse Williams-Hook 14, Steven Sing 11 and Jesse Schatz 10.
