League Women –Tracy Village Jets v Ansett

The Tracy Village Jets held off a late rally by Ansett to claim their 7th straight victory Tuesday night as they slipped past the Blues 52-46. Tara Maxwell (6ppg) was the only player in double figures for the Bombers with 14, but they did just enough to take home the win. The absence of centre Georgii Howlett (19.5ppg) from the Bombers lineup gave Ansett a chance at knocking off the ladder leaders and Victoria Uhlig and Amelia Shanahan took advantage of that by hitting 14 points each, but it still wasn’t enough to pull off an upset. Maxwell hit 6 of her total during a 15-9 first quarter run by the Bombers and that buffer proved to be the winning margin in the end.

Warriors v Eagles

The Eagles had to put down an uprising from the Warriors before they could take home the points in their 59-32 win. The Warriors went on the warpath in the first quarter behind the sharpshooting Jennifer Kinsella (8ppg) who hit 10 of the Warrior points as they scrambled to a 13-10 lead. Kinsella finished with a team high 16, but despite her efforts nothing could hold back the Eagles once they put it all together. The Birds allowed the Warriors only 2 points in the second quarter as they flew past them for a 20-15 half time lead. The second half was all Eagles as Michelle Friel slammed home 26 points to finish with a team and game high 32. The Eagles outscored the Warriors 39-17 in the half to cruise home with their second win in a row.

Uni Rebels v Lightning

The Uni Rebels notched up win number six as they charged past Lightning 62-37. League leading scorer Tamara Sheppard (23.8ppg) proved almost unstoppable, again, as she dropped in a team and game high 29. Sheppard hit 17 in the first half as the Rebels powered out to a 30-16 lead that proved to be too much for the Lightning to overcome. Kelly Sealy led Lightning with 8. Delsey Ah Wang and Justine Schmidt lent support to Sheppard with 12 and 11 as the Rebels prepare for their top of the ladder clash next week with the undefeated Tracy Village Jets.

Ladder:                               Tracy Village Jets 7-0, Uni Rebels 6-1, Eagles 4-3, Ansett 3-4, Warriors 1-6 & Lightning 0-7

Next Week:                        Warriors v Lightning 6:15pm, Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets 7:45pm & Eagles v Ansett 9:15pm

League Men – Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

League leading Tracy Village Jets slammed the door on the Uni Rebels with a thumping 91-62 victory over last year’s reining premiers. Apart from the second quarter when the Rebels outscored the Bombers 20-18 they struggled to keep pace with the fleet footed Jets. Travis Ellis (23.7ppg) and Dan East led the bombardment for the Bombers as they combined for 55 points. Ellis racked up 35 points and East 20 as they found easy pickings on their way to the hoop. Simon Hamill was the lone standout for the Rebels with 12 points while the rest of the team found the stingy defense by the Jets too tough to handle.

Eagles v Ansett

Ansett did a number on the Eagles winning 82-50 after trailing by 3 after one quarter of play. The Eagles flew out to a 19-16 first quarter lead behind the good shooting of Matt McMahon who hit 8 of his 11 points in the quarter, but after that everything went Ansett’s way. Matt Hunt (17ppg) led from the front for the Blues with 24 points with Jake Feeney (22 @ 9.4ppg), and Tom Hunt & Jarrod Sheppard (13ea.) backing him up. The Blues ran over the Eagles during a 25-14 run in the second quarter for a 41-33 half time lead and then just powered home in the second half by pumping in 41 points to 17. Charles Benning top scored for the Eagles with a season high 20 and Joseph Johnson added 12.

Warriors v Lightning

For the second week in a row Lightning has survived a close contest to win. Lightning squeaked past the Warriors 64-63 as Jesse Bell hit a field goal and dropped in the free throw following it to deny the Warriors the victory. Lightning managed to get the ball into their shooter’s hands, namely Bell (20 @ 18.7ppg) and Cameron Bailey (19 @ 11.5ppg), the two gun shooters who can run up lots of points in a very short span of time if given the chance. Warrior Phil Collins (22ppg) gave it his all as he hit a season and game high 34 points (including 6 treys), but it wasn’t enough as the Warriors lost their sixth game of the competition. Ben Muvirimi chipped in with 10 for the Warriors while Brodie Hertel put in a stellar game for Lightning with 11.

Ladder:                   Tracy Village Jets 7-0, Ansett 5-2, Eagles 4-3, Lightning 3-3-1, Warriors 1-6, Uni Rebels 1-3-3

Next Week:    Eagles v Tracy Village Jets 6:15pm, Uni Rebels v Warriors 7:45pm & Ansett v Lightning 9:15pm
