League Women –Lightning v Ansett

Ansett had to come from behind during their 61-46 win against the tenacious Lightning. Lightning shot out of the blocks quickly to build up a 19-14 lead against their more highly fancied opposition, but the Blues brought them back down to earth with a turnaround in the second quarter that gave Ansett a 28-25 lead at the break. Sam Drescher (22.3ppg) was on fire early keeping the Blues in the game with 9 of her game and season high 32 points coming in the first quarter. Lightning stayed with the Blues throughout the third quarter, matching them point for point. However, despite the efforts of Lucy Murray (11 @ 6.8ppg) and Deearne Lee (8) Lightning still trailed by 3 before the start of the last quarter 42-39. With Drescher opening up the last quarter with two quick buckets the Blues were off and flying with support coming from Kate Hoschke (11 @ 5.9ppg) and Lauren Flanegan (8) as they set off on a 19-7 run that put the game out of reach for Lightning.

Uni Rebels v Warriors

The Uni Rebels dispatched the Warriors 72-50 with Tamara Sheppard leading the way with a game and season high of 29 points. Jamie Lee-Peris added 19 and Justine Schmidt 11 as the Rebels held off all challenges by the Warriors. Carolyn Nyhouse was back in action for the Warriors after a few rounds absence and she picked up right where she left off, hitting a team high 17. Her efforts, plus those of Jennifer Kinsella who chipped in with 10 just weren’t enough to stick with the Rebels who, despite missing two of their top scorers, won every quarter of play.

Eagles v Tracy Village Jets

The Tracy Village Jets had to pull out all the stops to overcome the Eagles 53-46. Neither team dominated the early stage’s of the game and as the fourth quarter loomed it was still up for grabs. Kylie Duggan (9.8ppg) once again lit up the score board to be best on court. After nailing a season high 26 last Tuesday against the Warriors, Duggan again had the hot hand as she peppered the hoop against the Eagles for a team and game high 22. The Eagles trailed 36-31 at half time, but scrambled a few points closer at the end of the third quarter after Katherine Hollis (14 @ 7.5ppg) dropped in a three pointer to make the score 46-44 in Jets. But the wheels fell off of the Eagle cart as they struggled to score in the last quarter, only 2 points, as the Jets hit 7 (six by Duggan) to claim the win. Georgii Howlett (17ppg) added 10 for the Jets while Megan Fitzpatrick & Rachel Watchorn had 9 each for the Eagels.
