League Women –Uni Rebels v Tracy Village Jets

Tracy Village Jets upended the Uni Rebels 72-58 to claim the Challenge Season Grand Final trophy for the first time since 1997. The final score line was almost a mirror image of the Jets 72-57 major semi final win that put them into the championship game. Annabelle Harbison led the Jets attack in the first half as she nailed 17 of her team high 22 points (including 4 treys) to give the Bombers a sleight 38-33 lead at half time. Georgii Howlett (13) and Tara Carroll (18) lent Harbison much needed support with a combined first half effort of 17. It wasn’t all Jets though in the first half as Michelle Friel and Justine Schmidt kept the Rebels in the game with some firepower of their own. Friel also hit 17 of her team high 22 while Schmidt finished up the game with 15. Fortunes changed for the Jets at the beginning of the second half as the Rebels bounced back behind the shooting accuracy of Trish Graham (16) who fired up the Rebels with three straight treys (4 for the game) to begin the third quarter as the charging Rebels raced to the lead with an 18-10 run that put them ahead 51-48. The last quarter was all Jets as they clamped down on defense, holding the Rebels to just 7 points while powering away with 24 of their own to fly home easy winners in what was a hard fought game. Carroll hit 10 points in that final stanza in what may have been her last game for the Bombers and it will be one they won’t forget in a hurry. Bench support proved to be a telling factor in the game as all Jets players got on the score sheet with points while the Rebels were forced to rely on just four players for points.

Grand Final

League MEN –Ansett v Uni Rebels

The Uni Rebels charged past upstart Ansett 83-64 to repeat as Challenge Season champions. The trophy winning effort was the ninth win in a row for the Rebels who last lost a game in Round 14 of the competition. Aaron Ritchie (22.8ppg) & Andre’Moss (31.3ppg) were once again the leading scorers with 24 and 23 respectively and it was mainly due to these two new recruits that the winning streak began. The Grand Final kicked off with a 25-12 run by the Rebels that put them in front and they never looked back, although Ansett proved to be made of tougher stuff during the middle of the game. The teams traded baskets in the 2nd and 3rd quarters without much change to the score board despite a big effort from guard Tom Hunt (12ppg) of the Blues, who hit 11 of his team and game high 25 to bring Ansett within 13 (65-52) heading into the last quarter. But the Rebels were not to be denied a repeat of last year’s win as Ritchie and Marcus Ch’ng (13.4ppg) fired the Rebels home. Tom Blake and Jarrod Sheppard (19ppg) chipped in with 11 and 10 for the Rebels while Bryce Whitaker (14.7ppg) and Jake Feeney added 14 and 11 for the Blues.

The win means the Uni Rebels men have won the last five Grand Finals since the Championship Season in 2009.
