March - the starting month for Bairiki!

At 4pm local time the ball was thrown into the air at centre court by the referee, this started the first game for the Bairiki Basketball Club competition.

The Bairiki Basketball Club based out of Bairiki, Tarawa uses the Government owned facilities in Tarawa as their competition venue. This venue, the Bairiki Courts, is the venue on which all major KBF competitions are held.

The Bairiki Basketball Club has started a mixed team competition consisting of teams of various skill levels and geneder. There are 5 teams in the competition of which there are male and female players. Competition is played in two halves of 10 minutes each and the team that is on courst at any point in time should have a female player. If none is present then the males play short. The competition will be played in a normal round robin with the playoff rankings based on points attained during the round robin. It is anticipated that this initial competition will take three weeks to complete.

This has been a new phase in the development of basketball in the often quiet town of Bairiki and this has all been thanks to the marvelous contribution of key persons notably - Monoo Mweretaka, Tekaai Atarake, Sualiki Neemia, Allie Johnnie and Tiim Romatoa to name a few. Notably these guys have either been national reps in basketball in their younger years or have held position in sports administration. This bunch is the new brains behind the resurgence and they are to be commended in their effort.

Go!....Bairiki....Go!
