Measurement day is such fun, isn't it?
Friday, 5 January 2007. Oh what fun measurement day is for a nationals! Plenty of anxious faces around the various measurement stations, plenty of last minute adjustments to black bands, hull weights, foils and a little sweating on the "new sails" just purchased back east - a long, long way away from the sail maker if there was a problem.
Actually, Nedlands Yacht Club, under the supervision by our National Measurer Steve Schutz, provided a very smooth operation for the measurement of all hulls above #1300, all sails, foils, spars and safety equipement on the 45 odd fleet of Flying Elevens that had arrived for the 2007 SUNSMART F11 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. Apart from one foil brought into question, all boats and equipement passed the test and recieved the eagerly anticipated measurer's stamp of approval.
Time to rig up and get out on the water for some "cobweb cleaning", testosterone letting, and much sligh/sneaky analysis of other crews status on the day before the big event.
Our two Tasmanian crews had arrived with some interesting stories of having to drive through constant and solid rain all the way across from Melbourne, after ferrying from the Tasmanian mainland. Another family from RPAYC who drove across from Sydney managed to contract a vicious "tummy bug", which threatened to wipe out their chances of making it to Perth right in the middle of nowhere, without the regular and most necessary "can" for relief.
A number of clubs brought their own coaches and were keenly viewing the Melville Waters with their charges before unleashing them to the 15-23kts afternoon Doctor in the afternoon.
All crews seemed happy with their pre-race form, with only one drama experienced on the water where one boat was holed by another - nothing some builder's bog would not fix, and one on beach drama where a new mainsail just unpacked was holed by a large gust dislocating a neighbouring boat from it's cradle landing on the gleaming new item causing some minor damage.
Everyone left in good spirits with a view to arriving in peak form for the next day's invitation race starting at 2pm.
