In another great display, Trevor Calder held of all challengers to register a hard fought win in the annual Around the Island Relay run in ideal conditions last Sunday morning. A toe injury to reigning champion Alan McNeil sidelined his attempt to notch up two wins in successive years but that didn’t prevent him coming out to support the field on the day.
With the walkers ready to lead off the competition at 5.15 am. on what was a glorious morning for a stroll around the Island, the tension was starting to take its toll with Corrine chomping at the bit and keen to get going before starters orders. With the field settled at last it was Corrine from “Shanks Pony” who led the way with a little under 5 minutes to the next starter Ian Kiernan (Still Thursti), followed out a minute or so later by Kim Nobbs.more

A selection of events will again be contested this year as National Championship events for athletes over the age of 15 years. These will include sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws events with the final program subject to interest in the various events. Competition is planned to start at 2.00 on the 3rd December and is an important competition opportunity for athletes that are chasing selection for the Norfolk Island team to the Oceania Championships in Cairns, Australia in June next year.more

On Saturday 26th November, the Norfolk Gift will be run, consisting of a mix of events but with the aim of discovering Norfolk’s fastest runner based on age and sex factoring. The “Gift” events will be the 100metres, the 400metres and the Middlegate mile with great cash and other prizes for each event. Two additional events this year will slot between the “Gift “events on the afternoons program and will be run as National Championship events – the long jump and the shot. If you fancy yourself as something of an athlete, either a sprinter, middle distance runner , jumper or thrower then now is the time to get training and to show us what you‘ve got on November 26th.Events begins at 2.00 p.m.more

The Around the Island Relay is an individual or team event, open to competitors of any age and consists of 6 legs of between 4 to 5 kilometres, across differing terrain mostly on the roads but with a great leg along tracks through the National Park exiting at Captain Cook memorial. Teams can comprise of two, three or six competitors, each running separate legs and all competitors, including individual participants are age and sex factored based on the World Masters Age-Graded Tables for a 25km local standard event for men and women adjusted on the basis of the distance covered by each runner or walker. Starting times will be progressive and the winners in each category will be the first across the line.more
Fiji 2-8 May 2011
Athletics Norfolk Island was fortunate to be able to attend the latest IAAF Kids Athletics Project workshop conducted in Nadi, Fiji by the Oceania RDC. Attending the course, along with 18 other participants from other MF around the region, was Tim Rogers (ANI board member) and Brett Thompson (Norfolk Island school PE teacher). Both Tim and Brett successfully completed the course and are now back on Norfolk Island preparing to commence the facilitation of the program.
Apia, Samoa 21-23 June 2011
Athletics Norfolk Island is pleased to be able to compete in the upcoming ‘Oceania Regional Championships’ in Apia, Samoa late next month.
Travelling from Norfolk via New Zealand, the small team of only two, will consist of athlete- Daniel (Pickles) Griffiths; and coach -Tim Rogers. Daniel will compete in the high jump event on day 1 of the competition. Daniel will compete alongside athletes from 22 federations from throughout the Pacific.
Athletics Norfolk Island is pleased to be able to offer this opportunity to Daniel, allowing him to compete in his first major competition off-Island. Good Luck Pickles!
