YOUTH GIRLS SET TO OPEN WITH BLOCKBUSTER DOUBLE HEADER
The 2016 AFLNEB Youth Girls League is set to kick start this Sunday at Birallee Park, Wodonga, beginning at 1pm the Wodonga Raiders taking on new comers the Alpine Lions, followed by Lavington and the Murray Felines.
The 2016 season features the introduction of two new teams into the competition with the Alpine Lions and the Murray Felines both fielding sides in the 4 team league. The 2016 season will consist of 9 home and away rounds with games spread across the region, followed by finals.
Football Development Manager, Zac Guilfoyle is excited and believes this is a “great opportunity to build on last year’s success”. Interest in women’s football has sky rocketed with “the AFL’s commitment to a National Competition meaning there is now a genuine pathway for girls at grass roots level”.
Football and Netball clubs are challenging enough to run, however the resources, effort and time being provided by these local clubs is outstanding and is a credit to the members who have volunteered their services to develop the competition.
Ovens and Murray league teams the Lavington Panthers FNC along with the Wodonga Raiders FNC both introduced teams in the inaugural season of 2015 and will continue their support in the Youth Girls League providing one team each. The newly established Murray Felines have gained affiliation with TDFL sides Rutherglen FNC, Wahgunyah FNC along with O&M side Corowa FNC, while the Alpine Lions have found a home with Ovens and King side Whorouly FNC.
At the completion of the season all girls will be eligible for selection for the representative team, the NEB Bushrangers, which will be selected to travel to Gippsland and compete against other country regions in the AFL Victoria YG Carnival in September.
